Show Notes
Steph Gaudreau of Stupid Easy Paleo takes us through what a paleo diet is. It’s an area of much debate in the media and difficult to determine. The media paints it as the “caveman” diet, which is one we cannot realistically recreate. Others refer to The Paleo Diet which is trademarked and very strict.
What is a paleo diet?
Steph’s definition is to base your diet around whole, real foods that are very nutrient dense. But understand your context, your needs and how to adjust that template based on your needs. Athletes and people who do a lot of tough and endurance training cut out carbs to get lean and adopt a paleo diet, and their performance starts to suffer because carb intake is too low. This is where making adjustments for your body and lifestyle is important.
How to get started on a paleo diet and succeed?
Rather than looking at it as “what am I going to take away”, which tends to lead to feelings of deprivation and cravings for the very thing you’re eliminating, Steph likes to take this approach: “What can I add to my routine? Eat more vegetables. Add fermented foods. Eat better quality proteins. Eat healthy fats. Add something new each week. Perhaps the first week you try a spaghetti squash instead of pasta and see how you like that. Taking small steps is more successful for most.
What does a paleo diet plate look like?
Half the plate is veggies, raw or cooked. The other half is mostly protein and some healthy fats (dressing, avocado, nuts).
